Database And Information Retrieval Assessment Task

SIT103 – Database and Information Retrieval Assessment Task 1 – Survey Report By Brett T Best (215125672) Question 1 A – Sequential Access Refers to the storage of records sorted by an ordered field. The records are serialized by a search key note that it does not need to be a primary key. Sequential file organisation is the simplest storage method according to [1]. The records are stored one after another and is used for small size files or information that could come in order. According to [2] this type of file organisation is not appropriate for interactive processing because you need to access all the records below the one you would like to read first. According to [3] inserting and deleting records is complicated and inefficient often requiring the shifting of a large number of records. Searching through the records is more efficient if the search condition is specified on the ordering field. The records can be of varying length and stored on magnetic tapes. B – Random Access Refers to the storage of records anywhere in a storage area that can be accessed directly without needing to search sequentially. According to [1] this file organisation depends on hashing as a mapping procedure however a collision resolution technique is needed; each of these techniques are crucial for this file organisation. According to [2] records are arranged in a logical order with a relationship between the key and record address often represented as F(key) âž ¤ Address.
